Creating a Better Tomorrow

Environmental stewardship has always been part of our heritage and today is a key consideration in virtually every aspect of our operations.

2020 Environmental Impact Goals

To drive results across the whole Smucker organization–from our large-scale operations to how we do business in our offices and manufacturing facilities each day–we established environment sustainability goals for 2020. Thanks to the commitment of our employees and business partners, we are well on our way to achieving our goals.

What We're Doing to Drive Results

See what actions we're taking now to help leave our planet a better place for future generations.

Thoughtfully managing the by-products from our operations is the first step in establishing a responsible process for reducing our waste. We have many waste management activities underway at each of our locations to help achieve this goal and continue to explore emerging technologies. The waste we do create is managed through robust reuse and recycling programs at all Smucker locations.

Sustainability Initiatives
  • Grind2Energy Corporate Dining Program
  • Recyclable Materials
  • TRUE Zero Waste Facility Certifications
Powerful Results

Our efforts to date have allowed us to achieve 95 percent divergence of waste to landfills.

Dedicated to water stewardship, Smucker is not only focused on responsible use of this important resource, but also in finding ways to return what water we can to the environment. We carefully review both the quantity of water we use and the quality of the water we output.

We coordinate regular third-party water assessments to help understand how we are using water and what opportunities exist for efficiencies and re-use.

Sustainability Initiatives
  • Third-Party Water Assessments
  • Facility Improvements
Powerful Results

From a 2014 baseline through 2018, our water use intensity has decreased by 17 percent.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

With the understanding that fossil fuels have a limited lifetime, we are dedicated to a low carbon energy state. Nearly 97% of our greenhouse gas emissions result from electricity, natural gas and steam sources. We continue to focus specifically on utility consumption reduction opportunities and responsible energy management.

We are evaluating our largest sites, which combined account for more than 80 percent of our GHG emissions, with a third-party to determine opportunities for improvement. Through this data-driven process, each facility will soon be able to determine optimal energy use by the exact department and manufacturing line in order to realize energy, emissions, and cost reductions through capital improvements.

In addition to our operational efforts, we have entered into a virtual power purchase agreement (“VPPA”) to increase the amount of renewable energy we contribute to the nation’s electrical grid. This long-term power purchase agreement with Lincoln Clean Energy will provide for 60 megawatts (MW) of the utility-scale 230 MW Plum Creek Wind Project in Wayne County, Nebraska. Starting in 2020, the wind energy produced from the Plum Creek project will address approximately 50% of our total electricity use.

  • Virtual Purchase Power Agreement
  • Renewable Energy Sources
Powerful Results

From 2014  baseline to 2018, GHG emissions intensity has been  reduced by 6%.
